Being a Deacon
What do we mean by 'Deacon' at SBC?
Deacons are appointed to serve the church and support the Pastors in the spiritual oversight of the church.
The primary duties of SBC’s diaconate include:
1. To support the Pastors in the pastoral oversight and administration of the church.
2. To act as counsellors and assistants to the Pastors and other ministry leaders (in relation to advancing the spiritual well- being of the church).
3. In partnership with the Pastors, to be watchful guardians of the purity and good order of the church, striving to maintain a healthful tone of Christian faith and activity within the body .
If you are considering serving as a Deacon we have a number of useful documents to support you as you consider the role and responsibility, and to guide you as you serve as a Deacon. A good starting point is this handy booklet Being a deacon
Deacons share with pastors in the leadership of the church. As leaders they need to depend on God and on one another for spiritual guidance, encouragement, perseverance and support in the fulfilment of the leadership role to which they are called Our Leadership Covenant
Deacons are expected to support pastors with prayer at Communion Guidance Notes - Communion Prayer
The appointment of Deacons and Pastors is set out in SBC's governing document - SBC Articles of Association This policy document expands on how we appoint deacons Policy - Appointing Deacons
